Hi, I’m Casey—a queer analog photographer and filmmaker based in Los Angeles, California. Over the years, my camera and I have found our way to the gay bar more times than I can count. The result? A vibrant portfolio and a blog dedicated to capturing the magic of queer nightlife on 35mm film.
Why I Love Gay Bars
Gay bars are more than just places to grab a drink—they’re sacred spaces for the LGBTQ+ community. For many of us, these venues are among the few places where we feel truly at home, surrounded by other queers, gays, trans folks, and everyone in between. Inside a gay bar, you’re free from the pressures of a heteronormative world—a space where individuality thrives and authenticity is celebrated.
As a gay man, I cherish these spaces. They’re vital for our community and should always be protected. This is why I feel so passionate about documenting queer nightlife through my lens—it’s my way of preserving the beauty and energy of these unique places.
Shooting Queer Nightlife on Film
My trusty sidekick for nightlife photography is my Olympus Stylus 35mm point-and-shoot camera. Compact enough to slip into my fanny pack, it’s the perfect companion for a night out. Shooting on analog film, especially CineStill 400D, adds a vibrant, timeless quality to every frame. With only a limited number of exposures per roll, I’m forced to be fully present and intentional with every shot.
This approach lets me capture nightlife authentically—the way it feels in the moment. The shimmering lights, bold outfits, and raw emotions come alive on film in a way that digital photography just can’t replicate.
A Nod to Queer Ballroom Culture
Before moving to Los Angeles, I spent time in Minneapolis, where I had the privilege of attending ballroom events with Vogue Down Minneapolis. Those nights were nothing short of extraordinary—extravagant displays of creativity, talent, and community.
Ballroom culture is an electrifying celebration of queerness and individuality, welcoming everyone under the LGBTQ+ umbrella. Now that I’m in Los Angeles, I’m eager to dive into the ballroom scene here. If you know where to start or have events I can attend, please let me know!
