Bringing Art to Life with Super16mm Film: My Collaboration with Prospect Refuge

I was thrilled when Prospect Refuge, a custom furniture and art studio based here in Los Angeles, reached out for a special project. As a filmmaker who shoots exclusively on analog motion picture film, this was a dream collaboration. The project, titled "Worlds Within," was a celebration of artistic vision, featuring works by artists like Joshua McGarvey, Emily Quandahl, Tara Austin, Marvin Freitas, and Hennepin Made.

Mathew from Prospect Refuge facilitated this collaboration. He handled everything from storyboarding and location scouting to scheduling. His passion for the project and trust in me to capture their vision on 16mm film was truly inspiring. The aim was to create a commercial-like video that felt warm, vintage, and authentic—qualities that only analog film can provide. For this shoot, I used two Krasnogorsk 3 16mm cameras, ensuring I always had a roll of film ready to go.

The "Worlds Within" pieces were extraordinary—think a silver couch you can draw on, paper mache lanterns, glass chairs, and one of the coolest green screen carpets I've ever seen. Each piece was designed to push boundaries, and my role was to translate that creative energy into film.

A huge shout-out to my assistant, Sawyer Brice, who brought his lighting expertise and creative eye to the shoot. Not only did Sawyer assist on set, but he also took the lead on editing. I handled the color grading to bring out the signature soft, grainy look that 16mm film offers. And let’s not forget Victoria Sass—her voiceover work was the perfect addition to the video. She was also a talented model during the shoot.

This project was one of the most exciting commercial collaborations I’ve worked on, and I can’t wait to do more like this for other small businesses in the Los Angeles area. If you know a brand or studio that would benefit from a similar marketing video, feel free to reach out!
