Hi, I’m Casey Pflipsen, a queer travel photographer and filmmaker specializing in analog 35mm photography and Super 8mm/Super 16mm motion picture film. As a proud member of the LGBTQ+ community, I bring my passion for storytelling, adventure, and queer representation to every project. Using vintage cameras powered by analog wind-up engineering, I can work in remote, off-grid locations without relying on electricity—perfect for rugged adventures like the 2023 Nauti Daddy Sailing Company campaign.
Why Analog Film Matters
Shooting on film is more than a creative choice—it’s a way of life. In 2019, I fell in love with analog photography and filmmaking, from 35mm film to 16mm motion picture film. The process slows me down, making every frame intentional. Unlike digital photography, where endless shots can lead to overwhelm, film pushes me to focus on the moment and craft each shot with care.
The results are timeless: the grain, texture, and nostalgia of analog film give my work a unique, authentic quality. While I make minor adjustments in post-production, the film often comes back from the lab nearly perfect—ready to share with clients.
The Nauti Daddy Sailing Campaign
When Captain Daddy Beau asked me to join him for a week-long sailing trip in the Bahamas, I was thrilled. My only stipulation? The entire campaign would be shot on analog film, and Beau wholeheartedly agreed.
The shoot’s concept was simple yet powerful: seven days on a sailboat with seven gay men, all strangers, exploring the beauty of the Bahamas. The trip was full of snorkeling, sunbathing, hiking, and even a bit of nude freedom (it was a clothing-optional sailboat, after all).
Beyond the adventure, it was a safe, welcoming space for queer individuals to connect, relax, and be themselves—something I strive to celebrate in my work as a queer photographer and gay filmmaker.
Cameras & Gear
For this analog-exclusive shoot, I packed:
Super 16mm Film: Krasnogorsk-3 (K3) camera with 7 rolls of Kodak 250D.
Super 8mm Film: Zenit Quartz camera with 7 cartridges of Kodak 50D.
35mm Photography: Canon Elan 7n for posed shots, Olympus Stylus for candid moments, and a disposable underwater camera for snorkeling.
These cameras were perfect for the unpredictable, adventurous environment. Their durability and battery-free operation made them ideal for travel filmmaking.
Deliverables
For Nauti Daddy Sailing Company, I delivered:
A 3-minute highlight reel capturing the essence of the trip: adventure, relaxation, laughter, and connection.
12 social media videos (7-15 seconds each) optimized for Instagram Reels, TikTok, and YouTube Shorts. [click here to see all 12 videos]
